The trouble with experiments is the outcome is often not very attractive. Unless you’re experimenting with something that’s already very beautiful, and the fact that Anna Wise could sing “Deutschland, Deutschland über alles” through a traffic cone with a cold and still make it sound lovely probably helps free Sonnymoon up as a group to really play around with what they’re doing.
I’ve been so curious to find out what a Sonnymoon album will sound like the past two years, their music has been evolving so much that a traditional album format seems more and more in need of an update – if they’re starting out with an 8 minute single I’m even more intrigued to see what their full length project will turn out to be.

This collection is pretty much how my year in music looked, or at least how my year in free music looked (according to my iTunes I listened to Feist so much they’ll probably report me for stalking).
The “cover star” is Lianne La Havas. For me she’s a great example of the kind of talent coming out of the UK at the moment, making really incredible music but who a couple of years ago might have been stuffed unfairly in to a small box or passed over entirely as a marketing nightmare, instead in 2011 she was taking the industry by storm.
Whilst usually I would only expect most people to enjoy a handful of tracks from the usual “We Love” compilations, this really is a no-brainer selection of great music, so if you only download one from PMOI, let it be this one.
Music is never really “free”, the artists who make it and generously share it with us put their all in to it and deserve our ears and our support, so please listen, spread the word, buy their albums and go to see them live.
